12 Rules For Life – An Antidote to Chaos, Jordan B. Peterson

  • If we wish to take care of ourselves properly, we would have to respect ourselves – but we don’t, because we are – not least in our own eyes – fallen creatures.
  • You have some vital role to play in the unfolding destiny of the world. You are, therefore, morally obliged to take care of yourself.
  • “Happy” is by no means synonymous with “good”.
  • You need to know who you are so that you understand your armament and bolster yourself concerning your limitations. You need to know where you are going so that you can limit the extent of chaos in your life, restructure order, and bring the divine force of hope to bear on the world.
  • Perhaps you are overvaluing what you don’t have and undervaluing what you do.
  • You must decide how much of your time to spend on this, and how much on that. You must decide what to let go, and what to pursue.
  • Perhaps what you want is blinding you to what else could be.
  • Don’t waste your time questioning how you know that what you are doing is wrong if you are certain that it is.
  • Stop saying those things that make you weak and ashamed. Say only those things that make you strong. Do only those things that you could speak of with honour.
  • Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world.

Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor E. Frankl

  • Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s way.
  • Those who have a ‘why’ to live, can bear with almost any ‘how’.
  • But there was no need to be ashamed of tears, for tears bore witness that a man had the greatest courage, the courage to suffer.’
  • An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behaviour.
  • No man should judge unless he asks himself in absolute honesty whether in a similar situation he might not have done the same.
  • Happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue.
  • Man does not simply exist but always decides what his existence will be, and what he will become the next moment. By the same token, every human being has the freedom to change at any instant.

Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda

  • The power of unfulfilled desires is the root of all man’s slavery.
  • You do not have to struggle to reach God, but you do have to struggle to tear away the self-created veil that hides him from you.
  • Seeds of past karma cannot germinate if they are roasted in the fires of divine wisdom.
  • Moral: Look fear in the face and it will cease to trouble you.
  • To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven.

Mind Platter, Najwa Zebian

  • Ironically, the more you try to show your good intentions, the more reason you give them to knock you down. Keep your head up high and be confident in what you do. Be confident in your intentions and keep your eyes ahead instead of wasting your time on those who want to drag you back. Because you can’t change people’s views, you have to believe that true change for yourself comes from within you, not from anyone else.
  • Don’t make yourself part of others’ plans. Make your plan and be part of it.
  • Be a leader. A leader of your own life. And don’t get yourself to a point where you realise that you are on a road that is not your own.
  • Don’t make spontaneous decisions unless the why is spontaneously answered in your heart.
  • If you don’t believe in yourself, don’t expect anyone to believe in you. If you don’t see the best in yourself, don’t expect anyone to see the best in you.

Conclusion

Reading exposes you to a wealth of knowledge that could prove useful at inconvenient moments. It is thought that a person’s capacity to handle any difficult situation strongly correlates with the breadth of his or her knowledge. The more information you have, the better.

“A small room full of books is not a small room at all.”

Reading is crucial because it allows you to learn more about the world and other people. Reading allows you to view the world from a unique perspective that is not your own.  Your mind is always being fed new information after each new book you read, and you never know when it could come in handy. You will be better able to face any issue if you have more knowledge.
