How to have a word in the family? Through Discussion, Debate, or Argument

Communication is the core of all lives. Even plants, trees, and animals communicate in their own unique way. Being human, we all know the importance of communication.

Whether we have to maintain a personal relationship or professional relationship, we nurture it through our communication. In our family relationships also, we communicate daily. It’s the way of our communication, through which we maintain sweetness in relations. If we fail to understand, how to interact with individuals, the sweetness can be converted into bitterness.

If it’s so much important, then we must understand the different ways of communication, especially in the family. Let’s check these three ways of communication here:

Discussion

It is a talk in which each member or participant gets a chance to express and share his or her own ideas freely. Everyone talks about their own ideas, views, and thoughts or opinions about a topic or the main point of discussion. The purpose of a discussion is to reach an intellectual, wise, and suitable decision.

It’s really a wise decision to involve each and every family member in all major discussions. You never know, the youngest member of your family can give the wisest suggestions.

Debate

In a debate, there are two positions, one is in support of an idea or thought and the second position is against the same idea or thought. A debate generally is over some issue in which two groups may be formed, wherein the support group talks in favor of the issue or topic and the other group talks against it.

In a debate, there is no emphasis made on the other group or member, to agree and change their viewpoint. Rather there is an emphasis on the opportunity to express two different viewpoints. In a debate, there is no need to decide which viewpoint is right or wrong.

Debate, instead, is like an awareness creation process involving participants having contradictory viewpoints. Each view is equally respected and listened to.

The aim of a debate is again sharing of ideas, views, and thoughts or facts, to express and take a stand for one’s position but not necessarily make the other person follow it. It involves talking convincingly and it should be taken as a healthy conversation always.

Argument

In an argument, one person or party tries to make the other person or party follow, agree or change, with a coercive stance. An argument leaves less or no scope of disagreement and makes an agreement with only one point of view compulsory.

So, it would be right to say that while debate aims at convincing, argument compels. In other words, one can say the argument is basically trying to impose some point of view on others forcefully, irrationally.

And there are times when these differing opinions and views need to be brought to the forefront and get communicated with each other and others in the family. We all may have come across the experience of trying either to discuss, debate, or argue with our family.
