ChatGPT Health is OpenAI’s feature that connects Apple Health and medical records to ChatGPT, letting it answer health questions using your data. OpenAI began rolling it out on July 23, 2026, to logged-in US users aged 18 and older on web and iOS, across the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. It isn’t available outside the US, on Android, or in Codex. According to OpenAI, it doesn’t use connected records or Apple Health data to train its models or target ads.

ToggleWhat is Health in ChatGPT?
Health in ChatGPT is the official name for the feature, and most people just call it ChatGPT Health. It adds a Health section to the ChatGPT sidebar where you connect your data, see trends, browse synced records, and reopen past health chats.
The interesting part isn’t the sidebar. OpenAI says more than 300 million people ask ChatGPT health questions every week, and that among early testers, over 70% of those conversations happened outside the dedicated health space. So the launch version lets ChatGPT use your connected data in any chat, if you allow it. Planning dinner with a food allergy or a weekend hike after an injury now works without switching tabs.
You can also type @Health in a message to tell ChatGPT to include your health context on purpose.
What can ChatGPT do with your medical records and Apple Health data?
Once your data syncs, ChatGPT can compare a new lab result with earlier tests, summarize what changed since your last appointment, and look for links between your sleep, activity, and workouts. OpenAI also says it can explain a visit note in plain language or help you draft questions for a follow-up.
It can also message you first. ChatGPT may send proactive updates when new records sync or when it spots a trend in your Apple Health data.
The model behind it depends on your plan. Free users get GPT-5.5 Instant. Paid users get GPT-5.6 Sol, which OpenAI calls its strongest model for health. Both were tested with physician-built scenarios, and OpenAI says physicians tried the product before release.
One limit matters here. ChatGPT can read your connected data, but it can’t edit your provider’s records or write anything back to Apple Health.
How do you connect Apple Health and medical records to ChatGPT?
You need to be in the US, 18 or older, and signed in on ChatGPT for web or iOS. Then:
- Open Health from the ChatGPT sidebar or More menu and select Get started.
- Choose a source: Apple Health, medical records from a supported US hospital system, One Medical, or Function Health.
- For Apple Health, use the ChatGPT iOS app and pick which data categories to share.
- Wait a few minutes while your information syncs. You can connect more accounts in the meantime.
- Review the conditions and medications ChatGPT lists. Remove what’s outdated and add anything missing, including family history.
If you track things with a wearable or a nutrition app, turn on sharing with Apple Health first. ChatGPT only sees what that app pushes into Apple Health, and OpenAI warns that some proprietary scores may not transfer.
You don’t have to connect anything to ask health questions. Connecting is what makes the answers specific to you.
Is ChatGPT Health safe? The privacy controls
OpenAI built several controls into the feature, and they’re worth knowing before you connect anything.
By default, ChatGPT asks permission before it uses your records or Apple Health data in an answer. You can approve each request or choose always allow, which turns the prompts off. The setting lives in Settings > Plugins > Health.
You can disconnect any source under Health > Accounts. OpenAI says data synced from that source is deleted from its systems within 30 days. But anything already pulled into a chat stays in your conversation history until you delete that chat.
Memory works differently for health. Memories aren’t created directly from your connected records or Apple Health data, though they can come from your Health conversations. Temporary Chat or turning memory off avoids that. And OpenAI says connected health information is excluded from model training and ad targeting regardless of your normal training setting.
The HIPAA catch
Here’s the part the launch post doesn’t dwell on. HIPAA covers your doctor and your insurer. Privacy experts quoted in coverage of the launch, and in a December 2025 New York Times report on people uploading records to chatbots, say it generally doesn’t follow your data into a consumer AI app. After you connect, the protections are OpenAI’s own policies, not federal health privacy law.
My read: treat the connection as a permission you can revoke, not a vault. If a diagnosis would cause you real harm if it ever leaked, the safest move is to leave that source disconnected and describe only what you need in a chat.
Where ChatGPT Health falls short
The data can be wrong. OpenAI says connected information may be incomplete or out of date. A medication can stay on your list after you stop taking it, so you have to tell ChatGPT when things change.
The setup can be rough. A STAT News writer who tried early access reported that none of his medical records connected at first, while Apple Health synced fine. That was an early test, but it’s a fair warning that record connections depend on your provider.
Coverage is narrow. It’s US-only, web and iOS only, and OpenAI hasn’t announced a date for Android or other countries.
And it isn’t a doctor. OpenAI says ChatGPT can still make mistakes and doesn’t replace professional care. Check anything important against the original record and your healthcare provider.
Is ChatGPT Health the same as ChatGPT for Healthcare?
No. ChatGPT Health is the consumer feature described above. ChatGPT for Healthcare is OpenAI’s product for hospitals and clinicians. On September 1, 2026, OpenAI announced that healthcare organizations can connect supported Epic records to it, with read-only access to authorized patient information. Different product, different audience, different rules.
ChatGPT Health FAQ
Is ChatGPT Health free?
ChatGPT Health is available on the Free plan, as well as Go, Plus, and Pro. OpenAI’s launch announcement doesn’t mention a separate fee for connecting records or Apple Health. Paid plans get the stronger GPT-5.6 Sol model.
Can I use ChatGPT Health in India or outside the US?
No. OpenAI has only launched Health in ChatGPT for US users aged 18 and older. The company hasn’t announced availability in other countries, so connecting medical records or Apple Health from outside the US isn’t supported right now.
Is ChatGPT Health on Android?
Not yet. The rollout covers ChatGPT on web and iOS. OpenAI hasn’t given a release timeline for Android, and Apple Health connections run through the iOS app.
Does OpenAI train its models on my health data?
OpenAI says no. Connected medical records, Apple Health information, and the conversations that use them aren’t used to train its foundation models or target ads, even if your general ChatGPT setting allows training.
Can ChatGPT change my medical records?
No. ChatGPT can read what you connect, but it can’t edit records held by your provider or write information back to Apple Health or another connected account.
How do I disconnect my health data from ChatGPT?
Go to Health > Accounts and disconnect the source. OpenAI says data synced from it is deleted from its systems within 30 days. Chats that already used the data stay until you delete them.
Is ChatGPT Health HIPAA compliant?
HIPAA generally covers healthcare providers and insurers, not consumer AI apps. OpenAI’s launch post describes its own safeguards, such as extra encryption and permission prompts, rather than HIPAA coverage for the consumer feature.
Bottom line
If you already ask ChatGPT about lab results, connecting your data saves you from pasting the same context over and over. That’s a real convenience. The price is that your records now live under OpenAI’s policies instead of HIPAA. Connect only what you’d be comfortable with that trade, keep the permission prompts on, and let your doctor have the final word.
