ToggleKeep your calendars marked in June, 2024 for Apple’s iOS18
Apple has stated time and again that it is developing AI capabilities, which will probably be included into the next platforms. Apple is most likely going to integrate generative AI into the Messages app and Siri, its virtual assistant, to enable functions like text summarization, recommendations, and more. It’s likely that Keynotes, Pages, Apple Music, and other apps on the Apple platform will also receive AI treatment.
Numerous AI features for iPhones will be available with Apple’s iOS 18, which is supported by a sizable language model. According to a recent report, the initial set of AI features for iPhones may be implemented locally on the device, negating the need for cloud servers. This being the largest software update since the original iOS is expected to be released by Apple on June 10 at WWDC 2024.
Apple will use cloud computing to support some AI features. Depending on the market, these features may use third-party language models like Baidu’s AI, OpenAI’s GPT, or Google’s Gemini. It is rumoured that the company is in discussions with the aforementioned companies about integrating different AI models into the iPhone.
In News
There are currently rumours circulating that iOS 18 may not include a chatbot similar to Copilot or ChatGPT. As an alternative, the platform may incorporate generative AI capabilities into a few of the first-party apps that are currently on the market to improve their functionality and efficiency.
Generative AI capability is likely to be used to supercharge applications and services such as Siri, the Notes app, the Spotlight search tool, the Safari web browser, the Apple Music app, among other services. Subsequently, it’s unclear as of yet whether iOS 18 will bring new AI features to all iPhones or just the newest and most anticipated models.
Apple’s Launch of iOS18
With “major new features and designs,” iOS 18 may be a “relatively groundbreaking” software update, but there isn’t much information available yet. It is purported that Apple executives have characterised iOS 18 as “driven and compelling.” With a “slew of new AI features,” it could be the “biggest” update to the software in the history of the iPhone.
In February, 2024, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, stated that the company is devoting an enormous deal of time and effort to artificial intelligence. He also stated that the company intends to release information about its ongoing AI research “later this year.” iPadOS 18, a version of iOS 18 with some features unique to the larger displays of Apple’s tablet lineup, will be released alongside iOS 18, as is the case with all iOS updates.
iOS18 With Artificial Intelligence
Apple invests more than $1 billion annually in hardware required to run large language models and AI research. According to rumours, Apple intends to enhance several of its built-in apps with AI in iOS 18. AI-assisted writing and slide deck creation can be found in apps like Pages and Keynote, and Apple Music may provide automatically generated playlists.
The first AI functions included in iOS 18 will operate locally on the device, independent of cloud servers. Some features may only be available on the iPhone 16 models with the more powerful chips due to the processing power required.
Apple is seeking a partner with a sizable hardware infrastructure to support cloud-based generative AI capabilities, such as the ability to generate images and compose essays in response to prompts. Apple has also held discussions with Baidu and OpenAI in addition to Google.
An enhanced Neural Engine with “significantly” more cores could be included in the upcoming A18 chip, which is intended for the iPhone 16 Pro models. This would enable better AI/machine learning performance. Apple’s intentions for AI in iOS 18 are further hinted at by the rumour regarding the Neural Engine.
A new version of Xcode, which Apple is developing, will have an AI tool to anticipate and complete code blocks, enabling developers to expedite the process of creating apps. With AI capabilities planned for Xcode, Apple is also testing apps using code generated by AI.
Conclusion
It is anticipated that iOS 18 will include a more customisable Home Screen, offering iPhone owners additional choices for how their device will appear. Apple intends to give users additional customisation options for the arrangement of their app icons. All iPhones that can run iOS 17, such as the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone SE 2, and newer, should be able to run iOS 18.
It is rumoured that iPadOS 18 will no longer support the A10X Fusion-powered 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, which were both produced in the first generation. It is improbable that the update will function on iPad models from the sixth and seventh generations
