ChatGPT is emerging as a threat to Google – Really?
By simply inputting a question, users can receive an instant response from the chatbot. This has led some to question the need for traditional search engines like Google, which require users to sift through multiple links to find the information they need.
However, the rise of ChatGPT and other AI tools has caused concern for Google and other companies in the search industry. There are fears that these tools could eventually replace traditional search engines, leading to a shift in the internet landscape.
In response, Google has reportedly issued a “red code” warning over ChatGPT, according to The New York Times and other media houses. The company is also reportedly working on its own AI strategy, as seen in the development of its chat tool LaMDA, which some claim has become sentient.
ChatGPT Not a Threat to Google Search
According to Margaret Mitchell, an AI researcher based in Seattle, the idea of ChatGPT replacing Google search is like reinventing the wheel. In the early days of web search, a user would input a sequence of text as a query and receive websites with the most likely sequences of text following the query.
ChatGPT works in a similar way, providing snippets of likely response text extracted from different websites. However, with the implementation of PageRank, websites began to be ranked based on the number of web pages linking to them, leading to more useful and reliable results.

What is LaMDA?
LaMDA is a research project being developed by Google that aims to improve the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
