Mesmerized by ChatGPT? Haven’t you heard about Google LaMDA – Check out Google LaMDA vs ChatGPT

There have been speculations that ChatGPT could pose a challenge to Google and its search business, potentially disrupting the company’s ad revenue.

However, it is worth noting that Google is also a leader in the field of artificial intelligence and has been developing its own advanced chatbot, LaMDA, as part of the Lambda project.

Google LaMDA vs ChatGPT

Given Google’s expertise and resources in the field of AI, it is likely that the company is working on developing advanced chatbots that could potentially rival or surpass ChatGPT in terms of functionality and capabilities.

It is not clear at this time what specific features or capabilities LaMDA will have, but it is likely that the chatbot will be able to understand and respond to more complex, open-ended questions, and potentially offer more sophisticated responses based on the context of the conversation.

What is LaMDA all about?

LaMDA is an AI-powered chatbot developed by Google as part of the Lambda project. Like ChatGPT, LaMDA is designed to carry out natural, human-like conversations and provide users with answers to specific questions or requests.

However, LaMDA is intended to be a more advanced chatbot that is able to understand the context of the conversation and respond to more complex, open-ended questions.

Comparing ChatGPT & LaMDA – Google LaMDA vs ChatGPT

When compared to ChatGPT, LaMDA still has room for improvement. While ChatGPT’s responses are more akin to a Q&A platform, LaMDA’s responses are more conversational, leading to a better user experience. This can be attributed to LaMDA being trained on dialogues, while ChatGPT is said to be trained on web texts.

ChatGpt and LaMDA are both AI-powered chatbots that use natural language processing techniques to understand and respond to user input. ChatGpt is developed by OpenAI, while LaMDA is a research project being developed by Google as part of the Lambda project.

Both chatbots are designed to carry out natural, human-like conversations and to provide users with answers to specific questions or requests. However, there are some key differences between the two chatbots:

  • ChatGpt is a standalone chatbot that is available for use by anyone with an internet connection. LaMDA, on the other hand, is a research project that is not currently available to the general public.
  • ChatGpt is designed to provide users with answers to specific questions or requests, while LaMDA is intended to be a more advanced chatbot that is able to carry out open-ended conversations and understand the context of the conversation.
  • ChatGpt is trained on a large dataset of human-generated text and can generate responses in a variety of styles and formats. LaMDA, on the other hand, is trained on a smaller dataset of more structured dialogues and is intended to be able to understand and respond to more complex, open-ended questions.

Google is way ahead in technology advancements & AI

Google has been working on numerous LLM (Language Model) projects even before the launch of ChatGPT.

In a blog post, Andrew Moore, the Google Cloud VP and general manager of AI and Industry Solutions, stated that “If computer systems become more conversant with natural human languages, they become a foundation for more sophisticated use cases, able to not only understand user intent but also create complex bespoke solutions.”

Google has been developing several LLM (Large language models) projects such as LaMDA, PaLM, and T5, which have contributed to the improvement of the Cloud NL API’s v2 classification model.

Google’s LLM project is larger than any other LLM projects

In addition to its other LLM (Language Model) projects, Google has also been working on an ambitious project that supports the world’s 1000 most spoken languages. It has already unveiled a phase of this model, which is trained in 400 of the most spoken languages. Instead of launching it as a chatbot like ChatGPT, Google has taken a different approach with this model.

The primary use for this model will be in Google search, but it will not be the only use. The initiative aims to create a single system with a vast knowledge base about the world’s languages. According to Zoubin Ghahramani, vice president of research at Google AI, “Languages are like organisms, they’ve evolved from one another and they have certain similarities. And we can find some pretty spectacular advances in what we call zero-shot learning when we incorporate data from a new language into our 1,000 language model and get the ability to translate [what it’s learned] from a high-resource language to a low-resource language.”

Is ChatGPT Really a Threat to Google Search?

According to AI researcher Margaret Mitchell about Google LaMDA vs ChatGPT, the idea of ChatGPT taking over Google search is similar to reinventing the wheel. She points out that prior to the emergence of Pagerank, a web search query simply involved entering a sequence of text and receiving back websites with the most likely sequences of text following the query.

This, she says, is similar to where we are with ChatGPT today, except that instead of returning websites, ChatGPT provides snippets of likely response text extracted from different websites.

However, with the implementation of Pagerank, websites began to be ranked based on the number of web pages that linked to them. The websites with the most links were the ones that people tended to want. Mitchell argues that this means ChatGPT is in a stage similar to the early days of web search, where there is not always a great match between what you want and useful or reliable results.

Conclusion

While ChatGPT has gained significant attention and popularity, LaMDA has also received some attention in the media, particularly after a researcher claimed that the chatbot had become sentient. Despite this, LaMDA is not currently available for public use and is still in the research and development phase. It is not clear at this time when or if LaMDA will be released to the general public but Google LaMDA vs ChatGPT is surely the talk of the town.
