It is a classic vengeful-ghost narrative with Shining echoes. When other filmmakers use a swimming pool full of stage blood, Medak gets a greater impact from a rubber ball rolling down a flight of dark stairs.
The Babadook (2014)
Aussie The psychological gravitas of the horror subgenre is restored by Jennifer Kent’s brilliantly polished debut film, which also flips the monstrous-mommy cliche on its head. The movie staked out a dark domestic landscape previously ruled by Roman Polanski—Kent may have even excelled him. It was inventive, utterly real, and terrifying as hell.
