What is the Pink Moon and Why is it So Special in 2023?

The spring season, which started on March 20, 2023, with the spring equinox, began with this year’s full Moon in April. As a result, the full moon in April is known as the Paschal Full Moon, making it significant for people who observe Easter because the Paschal Full Moon determines when Easter falls.

When the sun and moon are on opposing sides of the Earth, a full moon occurs. The moon does not always pass through the Earth’s shadow because of the modest inclination of its orbit concerning the plane of the Earth’s orbit. As a result, we frequently glimpse our satellite’s fully illuminated side.

Why Is It Called The ‘Pink Moon’?

The April full moon occurs in the Hindu lunar month of Chaitra, which is around halfway through the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. The flower moon, which will rise on May 5, is the name of the following full moon.

Old Farmer’s Almanac uses names for full Moons that are derived from a variety of sources, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources.

In reality, the early spring blooming of a particular wildflower endemic to eastern North America—Phlox subulata, sometimes known as creeping phlox or moss phlox—also known as “moss pink”—often coincided with April’s full Moon. Like with many other full moon names, the April Pink Moon gets its name from this springtime connotation in Native American culture.

Osnat Katz, a space historian, notes that “various societies around the world had different names for the full Moons even before the almanac started producing name lists,” according to BBC Science Focus.

The Ojibwe people who were native to North America dubbed it the Sucker Moon after the widespread fish species known as the suckerfish, according to the Ontario Native Literacy Coalition. One of the animals that the Ojibwe believed to be a messenger between the spirit world and ours is this fish, also known as the remora.

Sights Of Other Celestial Bodies

Three of the five planets are visible to the naked eye. Mid-northern latitude watchers can view Mercury shortly after sunset as it approaches its peak elevation in the evening sky (that occurs on April 11).

Still, only 12 degrees high, Mercury will be challenging to see but not impossible. Venus is significantly brighter and located above Mercury. Venus is at an altitude of around 35 degrees at sunset, and because of its brightness, it is frequently mistaken for an airplane.

Facts Of This Phenomena

The Pink Moon, also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon, is a lunar phase that happens when shad, or fish from the herring family, swim upstream to spawn or lay eggs.

Jews also refer to the Pink Moon as the Pesach or Passover Moon. Until April 13, 2023, Jews will continue to celebrate Pesach or Passover.  Christians refer to the full Moon as the Paschal Moon. The day of Easter is fixed as soon as the Paschal Moon rises.  In India, both the Pink Moon’s arrival and the Hanuman Jayanti holiday fall on the same day.

On the day the full Moon emerges, Buddhists observe the Pink Moon, also known as Bak Poya, to commemorate the occasion when the Buddha visited Sri Lanka and stopped the war by resolving a dispute between two chiefs.

Amid the fasting month of Ramadan, the Pink Moon emerges on the Islamic calendar. Ramadan is a season for giving to others, praying, and keeping a strict fast from dawn to dark every day for thirty days. It commemorates the month in which the Qur’an Sharif was revealed.

Conclusion

Following the Pink Moon and April 6, the moon will rise one hour later each day and become more prominent one hour later each night. On April 13, during the final quarter phase, it will rise at midnight and set at noon when it is halfway lighted. Later, when it is in its new phase, the moon won’t be visible at night because it rises and sets at the same time as the sun.
